Typical cancellations and printer notations are seen and the counterfoil is still attached on this gor- geous example.

Angola banknotes are increasingly popular in recent years, and we are all learning how rare certain issues are, especially in high grade. The 1927 series is especially popular due to its stunning design elements are rarity. The 500 Angolares is the highest denomination of that series and hap- pens to be incredibly scarce in issued format. Additionally, this example is graded Choice Uncirculated and is seen with the first serial number for prefix “1G”. According to traceable auction data, this banknote may be only the third issued example to cross a major auction block since 2003. Presently, a mere five issued examples are graded in the PMG Population Report. A special offering, seldom seen, and stunningly beautiful. Closed staple holes are mentioned for accuracy.

For decades, the highest denomination in Bermuda was the 5 Pound Note. Steady inflation in the 1960s lead to the introduction of this note, which was first issued in 1966. Only 300,000 notes were printed, and this type is scarce today due to its high face value in contemporary times and its short stint in circulation. Bermuda adopted a decimal currency system in 1970, which forced the redemption of most Shillings and Pounds notes. Thankfully, this pack-fresh original was saved for posterity to be enjoyed today. At the time of cataloging, this is the lone Specimen graded in the PMG Population Report. This Specimen can be identified as DC-21fs as there is no sealed “FIVE” at right and no printed signature at bottom left. For issued notes of this variety, a manuscript countersigned would exist bottom left, and a small blue seal would be to the right of the Ocean Limited train. Hole punched cancellations and a red overprint are mentioned for accuracy. Visible embossing and deep colors are easily seen. Incredibly rare in this format and the first we have offered in this format.

A rare 10 Shillings post WWII Specimen from the first issue of Commonwealth Bank of Australia, where the Bank was the sole currency issuer for the Australia. Higher denominations from earlier issues were withdrawn to combat tax evaders. Most strikingly, compared to previous issues, there was a shift from exclusively depicting the sitting monarch on the banknotes. It would be fair to suggest that a more pro-Australian approach was used with the inclusion of portraits of individuals that were seen to have contributed to the establishing of Australia as a country. Serial number AC00 000096 can be seen, the same number as our next lot, Pick 30s. Specimen is marked clearly on both the back and the front. Matthew Flinders, the navigator and car- tographer, on the face, who also renamed New Holland to Australia. This is only the second time that we have offered this variety, and is genuinely rare.
