A dispatch from Montreal to the To- ronto World savs it is understood that the directors of the Canadian Pacifio railway have passed a resolution in the shape of a protest against the government of Canada giving the bonus proposed and already ratified by the privy council tothe Hud- son’s Bay railway project. They contend that the line, if ever built, will divert traffic from them and that nearly two hundred miles of the road will parallel their road West of Winnipeg, and that the road isnotrejuired. They also stated that if the Hudsons’ Bay road is aided the C. P. R. will ask for an additional allow- ance on account of transportation of mails to different parts of the country.

There is great indignation expressed amongst Democrats over the attack made upon President Cleveland at the New England Methodist conference by Rev. Dr. Landing, who charged him with drunkenness at the chamber of commerce dinner, and denunciation of the clerical vilifier are heard on every hand. Chauncey Depew said: “There is only one reply that can be made to such a story—it is absolutely contemptible and absurd. I satnear him at the dinner, and say he was absolutely sober.”

When the Rev. Horace Bushnell was a boy, he was very desirous of knowing something about music, No one in the family could teach him, however, and his mother, with that divine patience and insight which belong to mothers in general, found that if the lad was to have his wish at all it must be through her. She obtained a book and soon tanght him all she knew—the scale, the keynote and how to find it, and the time of the notes.

This was only ‘book learning,” how- ever, and the question was to adapt it to the use of the voice. Little Horace wanted to sing by note, and that his mother could not teach him. She could sing by ear, however, and the two hit upon a species of reverse process. The mother sang familiar tunes, and the boy watched the notes, observing how the intervals and Ume ran aiong, ana, as ne expressed it, ‘‘soon began almost to sing with us,”

And from singing airs they knew into notes that bore no meaning they finally learned to sing airs they did not know out of similar notation, The method had been unlocked, and further progress was easy. The mother’s heart had found out the way.—Youth’s Companion.
